Individuals, Couples and Family Therapy

About Counseling

No one is immune from the challenging situations in life, and while you may have successfully navigated through other difficulties you've faced, there's nothing wrong with seeking out extra support when you need it. In fact, self-aware individuals realize they need help, and that is an important factor for maintaining resiliency through all of life’s challenges. By accepting where you're at in life and making a commitment to change the situation by seeking therapy, you are able to end personal suffering.

How Counseling Can Help

Individuals can attain a number of long-lasting benefits from participating in therapy. Therapists can provide support, problem-solving skills, and enhanced coping strategies; giving you the tools you need to work through personal issues, family concerns, marital problems and the hassles of daily life.

Some of the benefits available from therapy include:

  • Resolving the issues that brought you in to therapy
  • Attaining a better understanding of yourself and your behavior
  • Managing anger, depression, grief, anxiety, stress and other emotional responses
  • Changing old negative behavior patterns and developing new helpful ones
  • Developing skills for improving your relationships
  • Discovering new ways to solve problems in your marriage or family
  • Meeting goals and developing plans for your future
  • Improving your self-esteem and creating or maintaining your personal identity
What To Expect

Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therapy will be different depending on the individual. In general, you can expect to discuss the events that have happened or are happening in your life that brought you in to treatment, your personal history relevant to your issue, and report progress (or any new insights gained) from the previous therapy session. Depending on your specific needs, therapy can be short-term, for a specific issue, or longer-term, to deal with more difficult patterns or your desire for more personal development. Either way, it is most common to schedule regular sessions with your therapist (usually weekly for the quickest results). Once you have resolved the issue(s) that brought you in to therapy, treatment is terminated at that time with the understanding that should anything change you are always welcome to return and work on other concerns that may arise.

It is important to understand that you will get more benefits from therapy and quicker results if you actively participate in the process. The ultimate purpose of therapy is to help you bring what you learn in session back into your life. Therefore, beyond the work you do in therapy sessions, your therapist may suggest some things you can do outside of therapy to support your process - such as reading a pertinent book, journaling on specific topics, noting particular behaviors or taking action on your goals.

Sometimes therapy isn’t enough to resolve the symptoms someone presents with and a referral for a psychiatric evaluation and psychotropic medication(s) will be made. This does not mean that you have to take medication(s) or that if you take medication(s), you will have to continue to take them for the rest of your life. A referral for an evaluation and psychotropic medication(s) may be discussed if your therapist feels that it would be a benefit to your emotional health. Research has been able to demonstrate that in many situations, the best treatment results are achieved when therapy and psychotropic medication(s) are utilized concurrently during treatment.

Additionally, there are other behavioral health support services available in our community and this information will be provided to clients so they can benefit from these services as well. You are always welcome to ask questions and seek additional information about any of the services that are recommended for you.

"Since June 2017 Mrs. Dawn Weaver has been a special part in my recovery since my divorce. Dawn has talked me through the painful and emotional process by focusing on what’s important and staying positive. There were many moments that she has talked me down when my mind wanted to play games and believe I wouldn’t be ok. Dawn used techniques to have me focus on a special event in my life and talk through every detail of that moment and it worked I focused on that moment and not the negative thoughts that were crippling me. Since my divorce I have made many changes in my life physically and mentally all in part to the techniques and talks with Dawn. She doesn’t judge or try to tell me how to live my life she makes suggestions and a gives me a outsiders point of view. Dawn’s devotion and kind heart and professionalism in caring for those in crisis is a gift that I will never be able to repay."

"I can not even put into words how I feel about Dawn. She is the absolute best person I found to help my Daughter. I'm truly forever grateful for her. We are quickly approaching our 1yr anniversary with Dawn and I couldn't imagine where we would have been if it wasn't for her guidance and counseling. My Daughter was struggling with more than I could comprehend and to look back on this past year it's just truly amazing how she has came so far. Dawn has not only counseled my Daughter but also guided me along this process. She always went out of her way to make sure the proper resources were given to us. She truly found her calling and such an angel. She talks with much sincerity and you know she cares with her whole heart as she is crying with you, instead of just watching you cry. I wanted to write this for a long time now and hesitated writing because nothing I can say feels like it's good enough for her. She's simply amazing and such a wonderful gem for Hernando county. I only wish everyone else was as incredible as Dawn, maybe more adults and children would get the help they need. Dawn, we love you and thank you for everything you have done for us from the bottom of my heart."
